Why invest in a breadmaker?

The awesome smell of freshly baked bread wafting from your kitchen.

Perhaps the idea of owning a bread maker appeals to you but you’re a little old fashioned. You enjoy mixing and kneading by hand and find that an afternoon spent baking bread is a great way to spend your time, clear your mind and soothe your soul.

But we’ve got a pretty impressive list of reasons that might convince you that using a bread maker is a better idea. And no, we’re not going to say ‘because it’s easier’. There are actually a few surprise reasons that a machine is better than your hands.

Your bread will look better

Perhaps appearance doesn’t count, but taste sure does.

In a bread maker, bread tends to rise higher and the texture is finer. This leads to an amazingly heavenly taste that can be very difficult to duplicate by hand. If you don’t believe me, spend a day making 2 loaves of bread – one by hand and one in a bread maker. When you cut into both loaves, you should instantly see a difference.

There’s nothing wrong with making a delicious loaf of bread with your hands now and again. But don’t think that the only reason to use a bread maker is because it’s easier.

Less clean up

Maybe you love mixing dough but do you love the messy cleanup that comes with adding all of your ingredients together? With a bread maker you simply dump all of your ingredients into the pan. There’s no added bowls, spoons or utensils needed. Imagine the time that you can save.

Save your hands

This might not be a reason for everyone but if you have found that your hands don’t love kneading the dough as much as your soul does, it might be time to give them a rest. Getting the dough ready by hand can take half an hour. But a machine only takes about 5 minutes of your time to get going. There are plenty of other kitchen duties that you can use your hand energy for.

Less brain power

We all have days where our brain just can’t keep up with us. If you’re having one of those days, it’s definitely better to use your bread maker. There’s less steps involved and your brain can check out a little bit more often. Take advantage of built in timers and delays and make it easy on yourself.

Ready to give a bread maker a chance? Consider these brands. You won’t be disappointed.

Sourdough Recipe

Ingredients

3 cups of bread flour

1 cup of lukewarm water

3/4 cup sourdough starter

1/2 tablespoon sugar

1 3/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. Mix bread flour, sourdough starter, water and sugar incorporating all ingredients, into a ball. (Don’t be tempted to add any extra water as it is a dryer mixture – and that’s OK.) Cover with a damp tea towel and rest the dough.
  2. Place the dough into bread maker and add the salt. Select dough.
